to the material covered.
Why should I do a Theory Course ?
Flight training requires study in both the practical skills,
as well as theory. Your normal Long Briefings and Flight Lessons
cover the practical skills component of your flight training,
and it is assumed that you will study the theoretical component
yourself.
Many students choose to self study, and for those who are use
to self study this works for them. However for most, just reading
a book is not sufficient. A theory course offers a number of advantages
over the self study option.
- It ensures all required material is covered.
- It explains the material in a more thorough manner and explains
all principles in detail.
- You will learn the practical significance of the material
taught - and as a result you can learn not just facts, but why
they are important and how they relate to your flying.
- You have the opportunity to ask questions about the material
being covered.
- You enjoy a class environment where you can meet students
at a similar level to yourself, and share the learning experience.
A strong background in theory for the licence/rating being studied
is of vital importance to the flight training. For example, in
training for the Private Pilot's Licence, when you conduct your
first flight it is assumed that you understand how to interpret
weather forecasts, compile a flight plan and understand characteristics
of a map. This material is learnt in the theory course and does
not form a normal part of you practical training.
When Should I Do a Theory Course ?
For those studying towards the GFPT, you should plan to begin
the BAK course around first solo time.
For Private Pilot's Licence students, you should plan to complete
the course and exam before your first solo navigation flight (the
fourth navigation flight).
For Instrument Rating Students, you should complete the course
prior to commencing your practical training.
