GFPT Flying Curriculum

Flying Lessons during GFPT

All of the flying training for this stage is conducted in a Cessna 152 and training is limited to the local aerodrome (either Bankstown or Cessnock.)

Flying lessons during the GFPT focus on teaching the student how to handle the aircraft.  The lessons start with simple sequences such as climbing, turning and flying straight and level.

Students then progress to the circuit area where they practice their take-offs and landings.

It is during this stage of the course that students will fly solo for the first time - an exciting step for every pilot.

Lastly, students return to the training area to learn more complex sequences such as advanced stalling, precautionary search and landing and instrument flying.

During this stage, students are scheduled for a flight every day, although flights are subject to weather conditions.

The flying curriculum for the GFPT section comprises of 39 hours of flying; 26.5 hours dual (with an instructor),11.5 hours solo flying and 1 hour in the simulator. Not all students achieve a GFPT within 39 hours, and some students require additional flights.  For full time students, additional flights need to be paid for seperately.  Students can reduce the need for extra flights and minimise their cost of training by ensuring they are well prepared for each flight.  This includes pre-reading the board plans and reviewing the flight lesson plan so they know what they will be learning before hand.  Students should ask their instructor what they can do to prepare effectively for each flight.

The sequences during the GFPT section are;
