Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

How many hours will it take to get a Commercial Pilot Licence?

Everybody learns at a different rate, so it is impossible to answer this question in advance.  However, as a guide;

The CASA minimum is 150 hours.  To achieve this, the course has to be run in a specific way, with inter-related milestones for theory and flying.  At Basair, some students achieve their CPLs in 150 hours, although this is the exception to the rule.

An average student is likely to get their CPL in 160-170 hours, although some students take longer than this.

How do I apply for the course?

  • The process for applying for our courses is as follows:
      1. Send your completed application form in to us. There is no payment required at this stage.  You can apply on line on our Applications Page.
      2. Should you be accepted, we will send you a letter of offer.
      3. When you receive that letter, you will need to pay the enrolment fee.
      4. When we receive that payment, we will issue you with a confirmation of enrollment, which you can then take to the people in charge of issuing visas and apply for the student visa.

Do I have to pay upfront?

Part time students pay for their flying as they go.  However, full time students are required to make periodic installments during their course.

All full time students funds are assured.  For Australian students, the Australian Council of Private Education and Training (ACPET) hold insurance for any student registered in an accredited course.  For international students, the ESOS fund holds insurance for any student on a student visa.

This means that if the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) cannot complete the students course, either ACPET or ESOS will place the student in another provider without any financial loss to the student.

Learn more about the protection students receive by choosing to study at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO.)

    Do I need a Medical?

For a Commercial Pilot, you are required to undergo a class 1 medical. An ARN is required before this can be done.

A full list of medical examiners in Australia, as well as overseas is available on the CASA website - www.casa.gov.au

    What Educational Requirements are there?

We require you to have completed 12 years of schooling to undertake the course. Most airlines also generally require 12 years of schooling for someone to apply to join them.

It is generally suggested that you have completed English, Maths and Physics, although these are not mandatory subjects.

    What are the English Requirements?

English Language score from any of the following:

      • IELTS – 5.5 (General Training Module)
      • TOEFL – 71 (Internet Based Test)
